It’s easy to feel the enthusiasm for the game, and the excitement for the spotlight, that Ravens rookie running back J.K. Dobbins possesses.

After Dobbins ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns to help the Ravens clinch a playoff berth Sunday in Cincinnati, he could hardly contain himself.

“I’ve been dreaming about the Super Bowl and the NFL playoffs since I was a little kid. And now, it’s finally here,” Dobbins said with a wide smile. “I want to play in the big games, always. They say big-time players make big-time plays in big-time games – and I want to see if I’m a big-time player.”

Head Coach John Harbaugh was next to step up to the podium and talk with reporters. Before he did, he grabbed Dobbins and told him, “You are a big-time player.”

As Dobbins makes his first trip to the playoffs, the rookie second-round pick is already a star and a huge part of the Ravens’ dangerous offensive formula.

Top-seeded Baltimore had a record-setting offense last year entering its opening playoff game against the Tennessee Titans. It had a record-setting rushing attack. But the Ravens didn’t have a weapon like Dobbins, and that could make a mighty big difference this time around.

Asked Sunday what the key has been to the Ravens’ running game surge over the past five weeks, Harbaugh pointed to the offensive line and the blocking of the receivers. But he started with the running backs.

“A lot of these guys are just executing really well,” Harbaugh said. “The running backs are running very well. They’re making guys miss. They’re breaking tackles.”

Speaking about Dobbins on Monday, Harbaugh said “I love him as a person and a player.”

After Dobbins fumbled against the Jacksonville Jaguars a couple weeks ago, Harbaugh coached him up on the importance of holding onto the ball while he picked sod out of the rookie’s facemask. When the Ravens faced a goal-line situation later in the game, Dobbins got the call again, and this time he scored. Dobbins came to the sideline, hugged Harbaugh and thanked his coach for trusting him.

“I’m always going to trust you. You know why?” Harbaugh said, thumping Dobbins’ chest. “Because you’ve got that big ticker right in there – pumping. I love it.”

Dobbins’ nine touchdowns this season are the most by a rookie in franchise history. His six consecutive games with at least 50 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown is tied for the longest rookie streak since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, matching a couple of Hall of Famers in Eric Dickerson and Franco Harris.

Dobbins only reached double-digit carries in two of his first nine games as he was third in the Ravens’ pecking order behind veteran Mark Ingram II and Gus Edwards. Yet he finished the season with 805 yards rushing and averaged 6.0 yards per carry. That’s the most yards per carry of any running back in the NFL – more than Cleveland’s Nick Chubb (5.6), Green Bay’s Aaron Jones (5.5) and Tennessee’s Derrick Henry (5.4).

Dobbins’ speed to get the edge has stretched opposing defenses horizontally, helping to open up the middle for Edwards and Lamar Jackson – both running and passing. Opponents can no longer pack the middle of the field like the Titans did in last year’s playoff upset.

There was no better display of Dobbins’ mixture of power, balance and speed than his 72-yard touchdown run against the Bengals, in which he stiff-armed linebacker Germaine Pratt before hitting the jets and pulling away from the pack. Dobbins said fullback Patrick Ricard texted him earlier in the week saying they had to break a big run – one of the few things they hadn’t yet accomplished this season.

The Baltimore Ravens have two unsung heroes and their names are J.K. Dobbins and Tyus Bowser:
The Baltimore Ravens are entering week 17 of the NFL season. This Ravens team is reminiscent of teams of the past because they are currently in the wild card and are in control of their own destiny. Baltimore’s matchup to make the playoffs is against the 4-10-1 Cincinnati Bengals.

Despite not having their rookie quarterback Joe Burrow, the Bengals are on a two-game winning streak and are not to be taken lightly. It seems as though this Ravens team has gained some character after going through adversity, and that they are heating up just in time for the playoffs.

However, this article is going to be geared towards shining the light on some players who stepped up in the fourth quarter of the season. During late November/ early December the Ravens were decimated by Covid-19 and injuries.

Players stepping up:
Thankfully all players who tested positive have recovered and those who were injured are on the path to recovery. During this time of strain, there were a few players who I feel as though stepped up and made a big impact. Outside linebacker Tyus Bowser, and running back J.K. Dobbins has been making plays when their number has been called.

The Ravens have been looking for a reliable pass rusher to complement outside linebacker Matthew Judon since Suggs and Za’Darius smith have left. Bowser has made his impact as more than just a pass rusher. He recorded his first interception of the season against the Tennessee Titans in week 11.

When Bowser caught the interception I thought “ hmmm he has good hands for an outside linebacker”. Then Bowser caught one against the Pittsburgh Steelers and one against the Cleveland Browns.

Bowser is now tied with Marcus Peters for the most interceptions on the team this season with three. Bowser’s ability to rush the passer and drop back into coverage has been a boon to the Ravens as they attempt to build upon their four-game win streak.

Rookie J.K Dobbins has stepped up in a major way for the tail end of the season. Dobbins is averaging 5.3 yards per carrying and has seven touchdowns for the 2020 season. Gus Edwards and Dobbins have become the one-two punch in the Ravens backfield after Ingram’s workload decreased.

The second-round pick has shown the ability to catch out of the backfield, the ability to beat defenders to the outside, excellent balance, and most importantly the ability to put the ball in the end zone.

Since week 11, Dobbins has managed to score a touchdown each week. Dobbins appears to be fitting in well with Greg Roman’s run-centric offense and should have continued success going forward.

NEXT: Ravens year in review: 3 things we learned with the offensive line
Both of these players are young and have great potential. These two players have shown the propensity to make plays. Also, I would like to give credit to the coaches for putting players in the right position to make plays.

Even though this is a small sample size of about six weeks I think the Ravens will be able to play towards their strengths with the possibility of playoffs ahead.

“I wanted that to happen and so, on that TD run, it was excellent blocking,” Dobbins said. “Whenever I got to the sideline — a lot of people don’t think I can run. A lot of people don’t think that. And so, I finally got the opportunity to show my speed and that [if] you give me an opportunity to go, I’m going to go and I won’t get caught.”

Dobbins finished with the 18th-most rushing yards in the NFL this season and third-most rushing yards among rookie running backs, trailing the Indianapolis Colts’ Jonathan Taylor (1,169) and Jacksonville Jaguars’ James Robinson (1,070).

Dobbins was perturbed that he was the fifth running back drafted this year, trailing the Chiefs’ Clyde Helaire-Edwards, Lions’ D’Andre Swift, Taylor, and Rams’ Cam Akers. Dobbins’ patience was tested too, as he often saw fewer carries than Ingram and Edwards over the first half of the season.

“I don’t know that he’s been waiting for his opportunity. He’s been working for his opportunity – growing and learning, [being] a great competitor for us,” Harbaugh said. “He’s done a great job. He’s got a great attitude.”

Dobbins knows he’s in the right place, and that was hammered home when the Ravens topped 400 rushing yards in a dominant running performance in Cincinnati.

“It’s an amazing feeling. I’m so happy to be here; I’m so happy to be a Raven,” Dobbins said. “Getting into the playoffs is a great accomplishment, and I’m glad I can experience that my rookie year. But I’m the type of guy who wants more. I want to be great. I don’t want to be mediocre. Yes, I’m glad to be in the playoffs, but I know the goal and I know why I was brought here. And I’m just going to do everything I can to help this team win this first playoff game.”

There’s a little Baltimore history to rookie running backs propelling an offense in a playoff run.

In 2012, third-round rookie running back Bernard Pierce teamed up with Ray Rice to boost the Ravens’ rushing attack down the stretch. Pierce got hotter as the season progressed and led Baltimore in rushing in two of four playoff games (vs. Colts and vs. Patriots).

In 2000, first-round rookie running back Jamal Lewis carried the load for the Ravens offense for much of the season and especially in the playoffs, when he topped 100 yards twice and scored four touchdowns. He became the youngest player to ever score a touchdown in a Super Bowl.

Last week, Dobbins broke Lewis’ record for most rushing touchdowns by a Ravens rookie, and he knew the historical significance.

“It means a lot to me,” Dobbins said. “Jamal Lewis, I mean, he won NFL Offensive Player of the Year [in 2003], and he’s an amazing player. So, for me to do that, it’s an honor and a blessing. I’m just going to keep trying to get better.”

Now Dobbins will look to keep growing and follow in Lewis’ footsteps in his first trip to the playoffs, starting with Tennessee. Dobbins’ streak of six consecutive games with a touchdown began against the Titans earlier this season, when he ran for 70 yards and a score on a season-high 15 carries.

Some were surprised when the Ravens drafted Dobbins in the second round when they already had Ingram, Edwards and Justice Hill. But the Ravens did so knowing the Ohio State product could not only be a long-term lead back in Baltimore, but a difference-maker down the stretch this season.

“I can tell you this; I’m taking this opportunity to heart,” Dobbins said. “I’m going to try to do my best, and you’re going to get the best out of me.”

The Ravens will call on another quarterback to back up Lamar Jackson.

Trace McSorley has been placed on injured reserve with a knee injury suffered during Monday night’s victory over the Cleveland Browns.

With veteran Robert Griffin III (hamstring) already on the injured list, undrafted rookie Tyler Huntley is next in line to become the No. 2 quarterback. The Utah product has been on the practice squad all season and has been active for one game, but has not taken a snap.

Being placed on the injured reserve means McSorley will miss the final three games of the regular season. He had seen action in the past two games, relieving Griffin in the second half against the Pittsburgh Steelers and relieving Jackson on Monday night after he went to the locker room with cramps in the fourth quarter.

McSorley was injured when his knee buckled as he tried to make a cut on a third-down scramble. Jackson hustled back onto the field and on the next play and completed a 44-yard touchdown pass to Marquise Brown on fourth down that helped lift Baltimore to victory.

McSorley saw his first game action this season after spending his 2019 rookie year as the No. 3 quarterback. The sixth-round pick from Penn State completed three of 10 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown. He connected with Brown on a 70-yard touchdown in Pittsburgh.

In other roster moves, two players were cut from the practice squad – running back Tommy Bohanon and defensive tackle Braxton Hoyett.

For much of this season, when the Ravens offense looked in the mirror, it saw a unit that wasn’t quite as beautiful as it was a year ago.

But during Baltimore’s current three-game winning streak, some of the features that made last year’s offense so stunning have looked familiar.

The Ravens have scored 34, 47 and 40 points over the past three games, respectively. Baltimore piled up a season-high 409 offensive yards against the Jaguars in a 40-14 blowout win at M&T Bank Stadium Sunday afternoon.

“It just shows the potential of the offense and what we thought it would be week in and week out,” wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown said.

“We didn’t play a perfect game, but just to see everybody getting involved, getting touches, making plays – it’s something that we try to [strive for] each week. So, we’ve just got to keep going forward and try to build on it.”

What stood out about Sunday’s win is the Ravens did it without Lamar Jackson playing “Superman” again.

Jackson put the Ravens offense on his back in a huge Monday Night Football win in Cleveland, running for 124 yards and two touchdowns, then returning from the locker room to toss the fourth-down touchdown to Brown and drive the Ravens down the field for the game-winning field goal.

Six days later, Jackson still scored four touchdowns, but also let his weapons shine. He inflicted much of his damage from in and around the pocket.

For the first time since Week 1, Jackson tossed three touchdowns. He threw for 243 yards – his third-highest total of the season – and completed 17 of 22 passes. Jackson seemed surprised that it was his first three-touchdown passing game since September.

“That feels great. I’ve got to keep it going,” he said. “My guys got the ball in their hands, and they just did the rest for me.”

Ever since coming back from COVID-19, Jackson has been playing with a different confidence and joy. He crushed the Cowboys and Browns, but when the Jaguars surprisingly bottled him up a little better on the ground, Jackson didn’t panic and simply made Jacksonville pay a different way.

“We’ve just been bonding with each other a lot more ever since I came back from COVID-19 when we’re on the field,” Jackson said. “And our guys have just been focused – that’s just what’s on the field. Each and every drive, we just stack, and we’ve been scoring points.”

Jackson and the offense checked off several boxes that have been lacking.

Brown, who had just six catches for 54 yards in four November games, has 17 receptions for 272 yards over the past four weeks. While Brown’s three-game streak of scoring at least one touchdown was halted against Jacksonville, his 98 receiving yards were his most since Week 1.

Perhaps more important than the numbers were the drops that have plagued Brown in recent weeks didn’t rear their head against the Jags, as Brown caught six of seven targets.

“As a receiver in this league, you can’t drop the ball,” Brown said. “So, that’s what I pride myself on, and that’s what I’m going to continue to work on going forward.”

One of the best signs was that Brown hauled in a deep 44-yard pass along the sideline from Jackson in the second half. That kind of deep connection has been missing for much of the season, which has hampered the Ravens’ ability to threaten defenses vertically.

Womens Lamar Jackson Jersey

Other wide receivers have stepped up, too. Dez Bryant caught his first touchdown in three years and Miles Boykin, who went three straight games without a target, has caught two touchdowns in the past three games. Eight different players caught a pass against the Jaguars.

Four quarterbacks are listed among the NFL’s top 40 rushers this season. The Giants have faced two of them this month. On Sunday, they will try to restrain a third, and he happens to be the league’s reigning MVP and the most productive runner at his position.

Lamar Jackson is 12th in the NFL and leads the Baltimore Ravens with 828 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. In his breakout 2019 season, he rushed for 1,206 yards and seven scores. Jackson is the first quarterback in NFL history with at least 800 rushing yards in consecutive seasons.

Cheap Lamar Jackson Jersey

The Giants’ defense is getting accustomed to playing against dual-threat quarterbacks. On Dec. 6, Russell Wilson ran for 45 yards on seven carries, the longest a 19-yarder, in the Giants’ 17-12 victory in Seattle. Wilson is currently 40th in the league with 475 rushing yards.

One week after facing Wilson, the Giants went up against Arizona’s Kyler Murray, who ran for 47 yards on 12 attempts, none longer than 12 yards. Murray averaged 3.6 yards a carry vs. the Giants, well below his season average of 6.0 yards.

“This offense is extremely dangerous,” Bryant said. “It’s up to us what we want to do from here on out.”

Youth Lamar Jackson Jersey

Jackson was bottled up on the ground for much of the day against the Jaguars, but the Ravens’ top-ranked ground game still churned out yards. Rookie J.K. Dobbins, who has emerged as the team’s lead running back, gained 64 yards on 14 carries. Gus Edwards had 42 yards on nine runs and even showed a new wrinkle to his game with a career-high 34-yard reception.

The Ravens’ offensive line, which was an injury-riddled trouble spot early on this season, has found its top six to solidify the entire unit, despite Ronnie Stanley’s season-ending injury. Orlando Brown Jr. looks like a natural at left tackle, Patrick Mekari has done well stepping in at center, Ben Powers is excelling at right guard and D.J. Fluker and Tyre Phillips have shared right tackle duties well.

Brown Jr. said the group is playing with confidence bred from continuity, specifically citing improved communication.

“This group of five has been really, really good,” he said. “Everybody is playing hard, everybody knows what they’re doing, and everybody has bought in.”

The right guard spot has been under the microscope all year after Marshal Yanda’s retirement and Powers has really helped to fill the gap in recent weeks. Head Coach John Harbaugh said the second-year fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma is “playing definitely his best football of his young career.”

“He’s been very physical,” Harbaugh said. “He’s a really good athlete. He can really bend and move his feet. I think his anchor has really improved. He’s just the guy that takes coaching and says, ‘Yes Sir. OK,’ and tries to do it. It’s paying off for him.”

So, is this offense here to stay? Or was it more a matter of facing a 1-13 Jaguars team with the league’s worst-ranked defense?

“I think that remains to be seen,” Harbaugh said. “We definitely have a plan. I commend our offensive coaches and our players. We have a clear vision of what we want to try to do; the key is executing it – doing things the right way at a high level.

“We just have to keep getting better. We have to keep improving on the path that we’re at, and hopefully, we can do well next week. Every game stands on its own two feet, and we have to focus on our next challenge.”
